Fr. Lancelot Pereira S.J.

Fr. Lancelot Pereira S.J. (Fr. Lancy to most) was born on 11 August 1930. He completed his graduation from St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai, and his Ph.D. in Microbiology from Cornell University, USA. During his years as Principal of the College (1973 to 1980), he inspired and mentored scores of students and faculty. He was a visionary with remarkable leadership qualities and initiated and developed several academic and cultural programs of the College – the Life Science Dept. (University of Mumbai), the series of Khandala Seminars for faculty, Malhar – the intercollegiate student cultural festival, and the Indian Music Group IMG, to name a few. He was Head of the Dept. of Microbiology and founder Head of the Dept. of Life Sciences and Biochemistry. Fr. Lancy also served as a member of the UGC.

Fr. Lancy was a keen researcher and was the Director of the Caius Research Laboratory upto 1990, where he guided several M.Sc and Ph.D. students in the subject of Microbiology with his remarkable analytical skills and his razor-sharp mind.

Several books were authored by Fr. Lancy– The Enchanted Darkness, Our Enchanted Universe, Death the Final Freedom.

Fr. Lancy left for his heavenly abode on 28 January 2021. He will live on in the hearts of so many whom he has touched with his loving care. May his soul rest in peace.
