Obituary – Mr. Dominic Fernandes

Dominic Fernandes 16th June 1961-31st Aug. 1997 : First professional Librarian of the College Library. He built up the library collection, merged the Departmental Libraries to create the Centralised Science Library, created the new HR, started photocopying facility in the Library in 1977-78. The Lending Library with open access, is Dominic’s vision, much ahead of the times created under The Library Development Project 1976-1977. Open access library for undergraduate and junior college students was a revolutionary step.  There were no college libraries taking this bold step then and even today. Open access embodies the spirit of the Library, reflecting all the Five Laws of Library Science by Dr. S.R. Ranganathan, father of Library science in India.

Dominic was a multifaceted person; he started the famous Canteen,  lectured on public speaking, edited the College magazine and Bibliodelic for many years. Xavier’s Development Programme or XDP was created and nurtured by him. His collection of paintings adorns walls in every corridor of St. Xavier’s College today. Librarians in his time, remember him for his vibrant personality, he was the President of BUCLA (Bombay University College Librarians Association ) for a number of years.

We offer our heartfelt condolences to his family and request your prayers for the departed soul and for the loved ones he has left behind.
